Prayer: What is it exactly?

These are my thoughts from reading chapter one of Principles of Effective Prayer by Wentworth Pike.

What is Prayer?

  • Asking – Jesus recommends this highly.  (Matthew 7:7 and 21:22)
  • Communion – talking with, not just to, God; conversation
    • The primary office of prayer is communion with God.  To have Him is to have all…to aim at anything less than God Himself is to miss the mark” ~ F. J. Huegel
    • How rare it is to find a soul quiet enough to hear God speak.” ~ Fenelon
  • Adoration – enjoying the presence and person of God
    • Work through petition & intercession and come to a place where you are just enjoying the blessing of God’s presence in your life.
    • This will include times of praise and thanksgiving for what God has done, is doing and will do in your life.
  • Ministry of the Trinity – prayer is God at work in your life
    • Prayer originates with God, proceeds from God to God in the character, work and authority of God.
    • Prayer is the most wonderful act in the spiritual realm as well as a most mysterious affair.” ~ Watchman Nee

How does Prayer: asking, communion, adoration and the ministry of the Trinity look like practically in your life?
