Formula for Sexual Purity

One of the more straightforward and practical chapters of Scripture dealing with sexual sin is found in Proverbs 7. At the beginning of the chapter, we have the formula for staying sexually pure. Yes…the formula. As in, “IF I do this…THEN I will not do that”. Here are the verses I’d like us to focus on: (Prov.7:1-5, nasb)

My son, keep my words, and treasure my commandments within you. Keep my commandments and live, and my teaching as the apple of your eye. Bind them on your fingers; write them on the tablet of your heart. Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,” and call understanding your intimate friend; that they may keep you from an adulteress, from the foreigner who flatters with her words.

Being consumed with God’s Word will keep me from being consumed by sexual sin.

  • Wisdom should be treasured
    • It is not enough to possess a Bible or Bible knowledge. It must become a treasure to you. It must be something that you “keep” and “treasure”. The words of wisdom will need to be preserved in your heart and treasured more than all else if you will successfully battle sexual temptation. The promise of keeping the commandments is LIFE; note the contrast at the end of the chapter where the young man gives into sexual temptation: “he does not know it will cost him his life.”
  • Wisdom should be intimate
    • We keep wisdom and Gods Word intimate in three ways:
      • Before our eyes filter the world through the lens of the Word
      • Bound to our fingers allow the Word to guide in daily interactions
      • Burned in our hearts meditate on the Word so that it changes our thinking
    • We are close with wisdom when
      • We treat it as a cherished relative loving it and holding it dear
      • We consider it as a dear companion seeking its advice and heeding its instruction

The Formula for Sexual Purity:

IF I keep God’s Word treasured and close, THEN I will keep sexual sin powerless and distant.
